The Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism (SHP) founded and awards annually a Prize to three distinguished personalities from the international political, cultural, academic or entrepreneurial world, with a seminal social contribution through their careers and actions, based on and inspired by the classical values of Hellenism.
The Prize is awarded in the name of Lord Byron, the great poet and Philhellene who died in Missolonghi (April 19, 1824), having actively participated in the Greek War of Independence. Lord Byron became a symbol for Philhellenism. He represented the values of Hellenism in every aspect of his life and work: liberty, respect of human dignity, freedom of expression, independence of spirit. His early death in Missolonghi marked a life dedicated to the values of freedom and the eternal struggle for it.
The Lord Byron International Prize is awarded annually in a ceremony which takes place at the Academy of Athens. Each laureate of the annual Lord Byron Prize is awarded with a silver medal and a diploma. Moreover, SHP donates a grant of 10.000 USD in their name to an institution of their choice, which is active in areas that serve and promote the values of Hellenism and Philhellenism.
