One for those who died in Greece and one for those who participated in the Greek war for independence. According to this agreement, the Monument has been erected on the site of the War Museum on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The Monument commemorates and honours approximately 2000 emblematic Philhellenes who offered their services and often even their lives for the liberation of Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The SHP has studied and recorded the names of the Philhellenes who supported Greece, utilizing all available sources and bibliography. On the Philhellenes&#8217; Monument approximately 1200 names of volunteers who fought in Greece and 800 names of Philhellenes activists who supported the Greek Revolution from their countries of origin, have been engraved. For each one of these names there is documentation, which will soon be accessible to the public through SHP\u2019s website. Intellectuals, such as Johann<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> Joackim Winckelmann, Jean-Jacques Barth\u00e9lemy, Lord Byron, established Greece as the cradle of<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> Western civilisation and advocated an educational system in their societies with a character <\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\">centred on Hellenism. Liberalism and romanticism emerged from the processes that followed,<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> and found a point of intersection in Philhellenism. An anthropocentric movement with<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> noble intentions for the evolution of societies, which among others adopted the cause of the<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> liberation of Greece.<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"EOP-readonly EOP\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"zw-paragraph heading19664563\" data-width=\"624\" data-tabpoints=\"&#091;&#093;\" data-header=\"19664563\" data-textformat=\"{\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zw-paragraph heading19664563\" data-width=\"624\" data-tabpoints=\"&#091;&#093;\" data-header=\"19664563\" data-textformat=\"{\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-div\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zw-paragraph heading19664563\" data-width=\"624\" data-tabpoints=\"&#091;&#093;\" data-header=\"19664563\" data-textformat=\"{\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-div\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-content\"><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"89\">Since 1821, a large number of Philhellenic Committees have been founded in Europe, America and<\/span> <span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"86\">Asia, with the aim of financially supporting the Greek War of Independence and sending<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> humanitarian aid, volunteers and military equipment to Greece. Historical research emphasizes<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> the contribution of tens of thousands of women and men, who offered their time, their<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> personal fortunes, and even their own lives for a sacred purpose that marked the evolution of our<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> civilization. The struggle of Philhellenes volunteers on the battlefields and of Philhellenes<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> activists in their countries of origin, contributed decisively to the liberation of Greece.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"zw-paragraph heading19664563\" data-width=\"624\" data-tabpoints=\"&#091;&#093;\" data-header=\"19664563\" data-textformat=\"{\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-div\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zw-paragraph heading19664563\" data-width=\"624\" data-tabpoints=\"&#091;&#093;\" data-header=\"19664563\" data-textformat=\"{\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-div\">\n<div class=\"zw-line-content\">\n<p>The\u00a0Philhellenes\u2019\u00a0Monument\u00a0in\u00a0Athens\u00a0implements\u00a0the\u00a0unanimous\u00a0decision\u00a0number\u00a08\u00a0of\u00a0the <span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"95\">Fourth National Assembly of the Greek State, which took place in 1829 in Argos, and constitutes<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> an expression of honour and gratitude to the name known and anonymous Philhellenes heroes. The<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> Monument was designed and erected in 2025 by the Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> and the Philhellenism Museum, in collaboration with the War Museum of Athens.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zw-line-content\"><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"90\">The relief figure of the Victory, from the breastplate of the Temple of Athena Nike on the<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> Acropolis, dominates the centre of the Philhellenes&#8217; Monument. The well-known Nike untying her sandal has been embossed in the center of the monument. This is a sculpture of the 5th century BC, from the parapet of the temple of Nike (goddess Victory) on the Acropolis. It depicts Nike (Victory) slightly leaning her body to untie her sandal before she enters the sanctuary. The phrase ETERNAL GLORY by Homer (9<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"2\">th<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> century BC) is engraved on the left side of the relief, and on the right the phrase &#8220;I bow down my knee<\/span><span class=\"zw-portion zw-text-portion\" data-text-len=\"1\"> before you Philhellenes&#8221; by the Greek poet Achilles Paraschos (1838-1895).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zw-paragraph heading19664563\" data-width=\"624\" data-tabpoints=\"&#091;&#093;\" data-header=\"19664563\"
