class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism (SHP) offers annually the Lord Byron medal to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Private or public organisations and scholars who contributed to the promotion of Hellenism and Hellenist studies,<\/li>\n<li>Individuals or organisations which offer their support to the mission of SHP,<\/li>\n<li>Descendants of Philhellenes who offered their support to Greece during the war of independence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each honored person receives a copper medal and a diploma.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord Byron medals are awarded in a ceremony which takes place at the Philhellenism Museum of Athens.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" \u2018American Philhellenism\u2019 exhibition, that took place on April 14, 2021 in the Philhellenism Museum.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Geoffrey Pyatt, <\/strong>Ambassador of the USA in Greece. His Excellency, Geoffrey Pyatt, was awarded the \u2018Lord Byron\u2019 medal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Inauguration ceremony of the Philhellenism Museum that took place on July 7, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Lord Byron\u2019 medal was awarded to the following descendants of thirteen great Philhellenes, who offered valuable services, even their lives, to the Greek War of Independence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rea Metropoulou, <\/strong>descendant of the German Wilhelm Bellier de Launoy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nikos Apostolidis, <\/strong>descendant of the German Heinrich Treiber<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bruno Fabvier, <\/strong>descendant of the French Charles Nicolas Fabvier<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeannine Giudicelli<\/strong>, descendant of the French Pasquale Gambini<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vincent Touze<\/strong>, descendant of the French Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Maxime Raybaud<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pascale \/ Delphine Aurran de Sancy<\/strong>, descendant of the French Olivier Voutier<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christos Paraskevopoulos, <\/strong>descendant of the Italian Giuseppe Chiappe<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aikaterini Ioannidi, <\/strong>descendant of the Italian Michele Gramsi<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hugues Eynard<\/strong>, descendant of the Swiss Jean-Gabriel Eynard<\/li>\n<li><strong>Julius &amp; Loukia Fornezi, <\/strong>descendants of the Swiss Henri Forn\u00e8sy<\/li>\n<li><strong>James Abney-Hastings<\/strong>, descendant of the British Frank Abney Hastings<\/li>\n<li><strong>Julia Wainwright<\/strong>, descendant of the Americans Julia Ward Howe and Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gillian Kellogg<\/strong>, descendant of the Americans Julia Ward Howe and Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the same ceremony, four professors and a diplomat were also awarded the Lord Byron medal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> William St Clair<\/strong> (United Kingdom, 1937 \u2013 2021)<\/li>\n<li><strong> Maria Kalinowska<\/strong> (Poland)<\/li>\n<li><strong> Eva Latorre Broto<\/strong> (Spain)<\/li>\n<li><strong> Gosciwit Malinowski<\/strong> (Poland)<\/li>\n<li><strong> Theo Dirix<\/strong> (Diplomat from \u0392elgium)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ceremony for the anniversary of the Battle of Navarino that took place on October 20th, 2021, at the Philhellenism Museum.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord Byron medal was awarded to the descendants of three important admirals from the United Kingdom, France and Russia, key contributors of the victory of the Great Powers to the Battle of Navarino. They are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sir Christopher Codrington Bt., 4th Baronet,<\/strong> descendant of the admiral Sir Edward Codrington, commander of the Allied fleet during the Battle of Navarino<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charles Codrington<\/strong>, descendant of the admiral Sir Edward Codrington, commander of the Allied fleet during the Battle of Navarino<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annabelle Sylvester<\/strong>, descendant of the admiral Sir Edward Codrington, commander of the Allied fleet during the Battle of Navarino<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oriane Oskanian<\/strong>, descendant of the admiral Marie Henri Daniel Gauthier, comte de Rigny, commander of the French fleet in the Battle of Navarino<\/li>\n<li><strong>Georges Cyrill Chalachin<\/strong>, descendant of Anjou Pyotr Fedorovich, commander of the Russian fleet\u2019s flagship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ceremony for the Italian Philhellenism that took place on May 26, 2022 at the Philhellenism Museum.<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, the following were awarded the Lord Byron Medal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alberto Roccavilla<\/strong>, descendant of the great Italian Philhellene Michele Roccavilla, who offered valuable services and his own life, during the Greek Revolution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Salvatore Settis<\/strong>, Italian professor of Archeology and Art History, Salvatore Settis, who has contributed with his work to the promotion of Greco-Roman classical education internationally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Urania Papatheu<\/strong>, Greek-Italian Senator from Catania, Sicily, who promotes Greek-Italian friendship with her work and highlights Greece&#8217;s historical ties with Southern Italy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ceremony for the American Philhellenism that took place on May 31, 2022 at the Philhellenism Museum.<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, three important Hellenists professors from the USA and Canada, who have contributed significantly to the promotion of the Hellenic culture internationally, were awarded the Lord Byron medal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jacques Bouchard<\/strong>, professor at the University of Montreal,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Katherine Elisabeth Fleming<\/strong>, chancellor at New York University,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark Mazower<\/strong>, professor of history at Columbia University in New York.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ceremony which took place on July 10, 2022 at the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas \u2013 Peta, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Peta.<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, the following were awarded the Lord Byron Medal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paul Graf von Normann-Ehrenfels<\/strong>, descendant of the great German Philhellene General Normann, the leader of the Greek Regular army at the battle of Peta, who offered valuable services and his own life, during the Greek Revolution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matthias Bretschneider<\/strong>, director of the historic Dresden choir, which was directed in the 19th century by the German Philhellene Elster, who had fought as a volunteer at Peta.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sean Hemingway,<\/strong> grandson of the great 20th-century writer, Ernest Hemingway. Sean Hemingway is a distinguished scholar and curator of classical antiquities at the Metropolitan Museum (MET) in New York. The SHP honors him and his grandfather, Ernest Hemingway, who served as a journalist correspondent in Turkey during the critical period of 1922-1923, raising international awareness about the atrocities suffered by Greeks, Armenians, and others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jackie Murray<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Kentucky and the University at Buffalo in New York. She specializes in Imperial Greek literature, Hellenistic poetry, and the reception of classics in African American and Afro-Caribbean literature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Theodor Elster<\/strong>, the descendant of the Elster family and of the German musician, writer, and physician Philhellene Daniel Elster who volunteered in the Philhellenic Corps and fought in the Battle of Peta in 1822.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Artur Lompart<\/strong>, Ambassador of Poland in Greece<\/li>\n<li><strong>Erik Haupt<\/strong>, Ambassador of Hungary to Greece<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Kittmer<\/strong>, former British Ambassador to Greece<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kate Smith<\/strong>, former British Ambassador to Greece<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roderick Beaton<\/strong>, Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature and Director of the Centre for Hellenic Studies at King&#8217;s College London, Fellow of the British Academy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pierre Ducrey<\/strong>, Emeritus Professor of Archeology and History and former Rector of the University of Lausanne, Director of the Swiss Archaeological School in Greece (ESAG), president of the Hardt Foundation in Geneva, for the Study of Classical Antiquity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Victoria Hislop<\/strong>, author<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alicia Elsbeth Stallings<\/strong>, Professor of poetry, Oxford University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"parent":9532,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-17171","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
