Plate with a philhellenic theme
A porcelain plate with a philhellenic theme from the Montereau factory in France. Early 19th century. It presents a scene from the Revolution of 1821, inspired by a lithography of Karl Loeillot, titled “Turks capture Greek women and children”. The issue of slavery and the slave trade of Greeks, fueled the Philhellenic movement for decades even after the establishment of the new Greek state. The crowned names of emblematic Greeks and Philhellenes fighters and supporters of Greece are depicted around the central theme.
