Mantel clock with philhellenic subject

A very elegant and rare mantel clock in bronze of the early 19th century, from France with a philhellenic subject. It depicts a Souliote rider on horseback. The figure is inspired by a lithography of the French artist Karl Loeillot, on the subject “the day before the attack”. The Souliotes were the most experience warriors of the Greek Revolution, known to the European public from the works of Lord Byron.
