Mantel clock with philhellenic subject
A very elegant and rare mantel clock in bronze of the early 19th century, from France with a philhellenic subject. It depicts the Greek hero Konstantinos Kanaris in action. The Greek seaman balances standing on a boat, sailing in turbulent waves, holding the pistol in his left hand and an ax in his right hand. He is ready to approach an enemy ship and board it. The brave and selfless Kanaris was, together with the hero Marcos Botsaris, the most famous figures of the revolution throughout Europe and the USA.
