Moscho and Lambros Tzavellas

Painting of the first half of the 19th century, by the great German Philhellene General Carl Wilhelm Freiherr von Heideck (1788 – 1861). The painting depicts Moscho Tzavella over the severely wounded Lambros Tzavellas in the Battle of Kiafa, both of them being heroic figures of the pre-revolutionary period. During the battle, a handful of Souliotes defeated 10,000 Turks. Moscho, led 400 Souliote women, to resist against the attacks of numerous enemies who tried to capture them. Moscho’s heroism has been immortalized in folk songs and has also influenced philhellenic art.
