Markos Botsaris

Painting by an unknown painter, of the first half of the 19th century, which is probably based on a lost work of the great Italian Greek painter Ludovico Lipparini. Markos Botsaris salutes his family. The composition depicts the hero saying goodbye to his family, before leaving for Karpenisi, where he died a heroic death. Markos Botsaris is the most internationally acclaimed heroic figure of a Greek hero fighter of The Greek Revolution. His figure has been imprinted in the Philhellenic art in many forms, while emblematic literary works have been written about him around the world, such as the poem of the American poet Fitz- Greene Halleck.
