THE GOOSE GAME Renewed by the Greeks

 

 

We present to you the renewed board game from the collection of the Philhellenism Museum It is a game that traces its roots to ancient Greece, and the feats of Theseus, who crosses the galleries of the labyrinth in search of self-knowledge and triumph. This game has been played in Europe since the 16th century. In the 19th century it conquered the Philhellenic circles and the edition of the time symbolizes the liberation struggle of the Greeks in 1821.

The board of the game is a copy of the one Philhellenes used to play in the 19th century.

The pawns of the game are small busts of Lord Byron in 4 colors.

Lord Byron (1788 – 1824)

A restless and creative spirit, inspired by the values of Hellenic culture, in the early 19th century directs literature and intellectual life into new paths. He impresses with his poetic work, identifies with the Romantic Movement, is admired and worshipped internationally. Like Theseus and Odysseus, he sometimes succumbs to his weaknesses and sometimes faces them down, all the while on the look-out for a noble goal that will redeem him. Finally he transforms himself into a political and military being and identifies with the cause of the Greek revolution. His death in Missolonghi in 1824 shocked international public opinion, gave an explosive dimension to the international philhellenic movement, and turned the cause of Greece’s independence into a just vindication for his loss.

 

Opening Ceremony of the Philhellenism Museum & the Lord Byron Medal Award Ceremony to descendants of Philhellenes who fought for Greece during the Revolution of 1821

 

 

The ceremony will take place on July 7, 2021, at 19.00, at the Museum of Philhellenism.

The Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism (SHP – www.eefshp.org) organizes an opening ceremony of the Philhellenism Museum (www.phmus.org).

On the opening day, a ceremony will take place during which the SHP and the Philhellenism Museum will award the Lord Byron medal and an honorary diploma to 15 descendants of important Philhellenes who supported Greece during the Greek Revolution.

  • From the United Kingdom: Frank Abney Hastings

Attached you will find an appendix with short biographical notes of these Philhellenes.

We will also honour four representatives of the academic community from Spain, Poland and the United Kingdom and a diplomat from Belgium, who researched different aspects of Philhellenism and helped record the biographies of Philhellenes:

The ceremony will be attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Dendias (SHP´s actions are under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the Minister of Culture Ms. Mendoni, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Vlassis, the Regional Governor of Attica Mr. Patoulis, the Secretary General of the Academy of Athens Mr. Zerefos, the Ambassadors of the USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Poland, as well as Representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament, etc.
