The Greek Revolution in Spain, two centuries later
The Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism (SHP) and the Philhellenism Museum present an event organized by the Hellenic American Union and the Spanish-Greek Cultural Association (Asociación Cultural Hispano-Helénica), aiming to promote an important work related to Spanish Philhellenism.
The member of the Scientific Committee of SHP, Eva Latorre, participates in this event.
The event will take place on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 7.30 pm, at the Theater of the Hellenic American Union.
In the event, three editions of the Spanish-Greek Cultural Association will be presented, regarding the impact of the Greek Revolution on the Spanish-speaking world. The event will be held in Greek.
The volume entitled “Regions of the Revolution. The Greek uprising of 1821 in a transnational context”, was directed by Eva Latorre and Alvaro Garcia Marin. This work was recently released thanks to the financial support of the Greek Embassy in Madrid and the Costas and Eleni Ouranis Foundation. The event includes presentations in Spanish, English, Italian and Greek, from 14 scientists from all over the world. The authors of the texts analyze the Greek Revolution from various angles and its impact on the world.
In 2015, the volume “Griegos que el estandarte alzáis de libres” (“Greeks who raise the banner of the free”) of Eva Latorre was published. It is a rich collection of Spanish and South American philhellenic poetry from 1821 to 1843. The bibliographic activity of the Spanish-Greek Cultural Association about the Greek Revolution comprises a forthcoming publication of an independent volume regarding its impact on Cuba and, more precisely, on the influence of the Cuban poet Jose Luis Alfonso (1810-1881), and other future studies on the uprising of 1821.
The books are distributed in Greece, by Herodotus Publications (9 Mantzarou, Kolonaki, tel. 2103626349) and by the Philhellenism Museum.

ΒΙΟGRAPHIES
Eva Latorre (Barbastro, 1968) is a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish-Greek Cultural Association and a corresponding member of the Hellenic Writers’ Society. She was awarded the Lord Byron Medal of the Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism for her studies for Spanish philhellenes and philhellenism in Spain.
Álvaro García Marín (Madrid, 1978) is Professor of Modern Greek Studies at the Department of Translation and Interpretation, University of Málaga (Spain). In 2009 he supported his doctoral dissertation at the Complutense University of Madrid. He worked as a researcher at the Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CCHS) of the Spanish Research Center (CSIC). He has taught at the Columbia University (USA) and the University of Seville. His publication include the book Historias del vampiro griego (Stories of the Greek vampire, 2017).
Katerina Breyianni (Petalidi, Messinia, 1971) supported in 2000 her doctoral dissertation at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Les Banques, agriculture and the state: Strategies of credit and agrarian politics in Greece, from 1861 to 1940. She is the Director of Research (2017) at the Research Center for the History of Modern Hellenism of the Academy of Athens, where she has been serving since 2003. At KEINE she directs (2020-) a Research Program on the transnational approach to the interwar economic and social crisis.
Gilda Tentorio (Lecco, 1976) teaches modern Greek language and literature at the Pavia and Milan Universities. In 2004 she supported her doctoral dissertation at the University of Turin and in 2010, a postdoctoral research in Athens (IKY) on the presence of myth in contemporary Greek theater. She translates modern Greek literature and she is the president of the Italian Department of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis. In Binari’s original monograph, ruote e ali in Grecia (Rails, Wheels and Feathers in Greece, 2015) she researches poems and prose from the late 19th century until today.
Eusebi Ayensa (Figueres, 1967) is a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens (in the Class of Letters and Fine Arts), of the Royal Academy of Letters in Barcelona and of the Hellenic Society of Writers. He directs the Educational and Academic Department of the Archaeological site of Empuries, in northern Catalonia, and from 2007 to 2012 he was the director of the Cervantes Institute of Athens.
Nikos Pratsinis (Athens, 1957), studied Chemistry (EKPA) and attended postgraduate studies in Madrid and Lisbon. He works as a technical and literary translation translator, interpreter and translation teacher. He has translated in the Greek Chronicles on the Spanish conquest of America, Ramon Muntaner’s Expedition of the Catalans in the East and Eva Latorre’s work Liberators of a Great Nation, as well as the “Cavafy Rule” in Portuguese.
